PETROLATUM | FACT OR FICTION | SLUGGING & SLATHERING

After years of misinformation regarding the bad effects to the skin by mainstream cosmetic marketer’s, the skin care industry has finally embraced Petrolatum as fruitful addition to one’s skin care regimen.  What the industry was hiding was that Petrolatum’s beneficial properties for skin care and treatment have been extensively reported decades. It’s considered an occlusive moisturizer and skin protectant. It is non-comedogenic, non-irritant, and non-allergenic.  Highly used in wound care, sports medicine, pharmaceutical compounding as a vehicle for the delivery of drugs.  Petrolatum’s record in medical treatment applications to protect the skin against physical and chemical traumas are many, including the treatment of cuts, abrasions and burns goes undaunted.  As scientist continue to develop new products, the next 100 years will likely find this unique natural product, petrolatum, at the top of the list in the personal skin care industry.

BioKorium was at the forefront of the industry with the use of Petrolatum in its Waterscreen Skin Ointment, the perfect adjunct to new “Slugging” phenomenon.  Slugging was not a concept just started, people have been doing this for decades and has been part of BioKorium’s Skin Care Program since its inception.  Originally developed as an after-skin care adjunct to the Glycolic Acid Skin Peel which begun in the early 1990’s and was an integral part of that treatment skin care program.

Slugging is the act of Slathering Petrolatum on your face to take advantage of its occlusive nature.  This skincare trend gets its name from the “Slug-like” sheen it leaves on your skin after applying a petrolatum-based skin care product.  Yes, referring to a Slug or Snail like slime this creature leaves in its path.  Snail slime (mucopolysaccharide) is a kind of mucus (an external bodily secretion) produced by snails.

BioKorium was also at the forefront of Slugging and Slathering substantial amounts of hydration cream on your skin, compared to what the industry was preaching, to reach improved skin care results.  We believed and created a cosmetic moisturizing cream that is found in large containers, Skin Water Hydration Cream.  As petrolatum was being bad mouthed by the skin care industry for not being natural etc., so was Mineral Oil.  In 2010 we posted an article “MINERAL OIL: NATURAL OR NOT NATURAL, A MARKETING FALLACY,” by Javier O. Moreno, PharmD, RPh.  But we taught to our client base that Petrolatum and Mineral Oil are natural products, made from ancient, degraded plant materials deep in the earth.

Cosmetic companies would describe petrolatum products as an unrefined goo destructive to the skin.  Others, described “Petrolatum products to include mineral oil, motor oil, waxes, plastics, WD-40/lubricant sprays etc.”  Well, this is true, but as there are also different products derived from sugar: sorghum, molasses, brown sugar, refined sugar etc., there are also different products derived from petrolatum and different degrees and grades of the refinement process as well, which the cosmetic companies will not reveal.

According to Paula’s Choice, Cosmetic-grade mineral oil and petrolatum are considered the safest, most nonirritating moisturizing ingredients ever found (Sources: Cosmetic & Toiletries, January 2001, pg. 79, Cosmetic Dermatology, September 2000, pgs. 44-46).  Yes, they can keep air off the skin to some extent, but that’s what a good antioxidant is supposed to do; they don’t suffocate skin!  Moreover, petrolatum and mineral oil are known for being efficacious in wound healing, and also considered to be among the most effective moisturizing ingredient available (Source: Cosmetic & Toiletries, February 1998, pgs. 33-40).  Also, yes, Petrolatum is a natural product derived from ancient, degraded plant material.

Be on the lookout for BioKorium’s X-Treme-Slugging Kit, everything you need to do the job, it is coming soon.  Watch out for our new Introduction video on Hydration Slugging.

We also have a skin care plan in the works on Antioxidant Slugging, Glycolic Slugging, Slugging for Moisture, Slugging for Hair, Slugging for Hair; It is something BioKorium has been preaching and implementing since our inception since 1994.

ANTI-AGING SKIN WATER CHALLENGE | GRANDSON JOSEPH | 20 PLUS SKIN CARE

Practicing Anti-Aging is the specialty at BioKorium® Skin Care. In this episode Skin Care Expert, Esthetician and Grandma Vivian Moreno explains and demonstrates that the Future of Skin Care is forcing water into the skin.  Grandson Joseph explains to Grandmother Vivian that Skin Water feels cold upon application and feels it being absorbed, as if the skin is drinking it.  At the same time, he later said he felt like it was burning.  Vivian explains that your skin talks to you, there are skin indicators that tell you what your skin is currently going through.  When your skin is really dry and dehydrated; and don’t have the proper moisture balance, that’s what happens, sometimes people will feel a little stinging.

the burning feeling is skin dryness due to improper moisture balance.  Skin Care Concerns at 20 Plus are Beach, Sun and Tattoo maintenance.

Proper use of topical moisturizing and hydration products such as BioKorium® Skin Water® Hydration Cream with Hydro-Force® Technology can work to repair age related skin damage and a weakened skin barrier in order to reverse Transepidermal Water Loss and combat the signs of aging. What the mainstream Skin Care Industry instructs us to use in order to maintain proper skin hydration is not enough! Your skin remains thirsty. We at BioKorium® believe you need a Gulp of Water to maintain Skin Hydration, not a Sip!  Skin Water is the Big Gulp of Moisturizers.

Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL) refers to the evaporation of water through the epidermis, or outer layer, of your skin.  As we get older the loss of water through evaporation via your skin becomes higher, if you are younger, not so much.  Proper hydration is crucial in order to maintain a proper functioning body, as well as healthy skin at any age, even 20 Plus Skin.   Starting young means combatting Anti-Aging early.  Esthetician, Skin Care Specialist and Grandma Vivian Moreno demonstrates the penetrating qualities of how to Anti-Age with Skin Water®.

ANTI-AGE WITH ANTI-AGING SKIN CARE EXPERT…. VIVIAN | TREATMENT FOCUSED SKIN CARE

Practicing Anti-Aging is the specialty at BioKorium® Skin Care.  In this episode Skin Care Expert and Esthetician Vivian Moreno explains and demonstrates one of her Anti-Aging skin treatments which includes Microscrub, Facial Wash, Greek Yogurt, Grapesseed Lotion and Skin Water Hydration Cream.  The Future of Skin Care is all about forcing water into the skin.  The last thing to remember is that skin treatments are based on Seasons and Weather.

As we get older the loss of water through evaporation via your skin becomes higher. What does it means when your skin is unable to properly maintain its suppleness through normal hydration? This means that excess Transepidermal Water Loss is occurring due to damage or age impairment to the skin’s protective barrier faster than the body can replace it, therefore allowing excess moisture content to evaporate from the skin into the atmosphere, resulting in dry, irritated, dehydrated and/or itchy skin. Dry dehydrated skin can also accentuate fine lines and wrinkles.

Proper hydration is crucial in order to maintain a proper functioning body, as well as healthy skin. What would happen to your body if you were allowed to only drink 1 fluid ounce of water daily? You would absolutely know it would directly impact all bodily functions in a counterproductive way. Hence, we can look at Skin Care in the same manner. The Skin Care Industry has long sold the concept that there 1.7 ounce jar of cream will do it all, from skin hydration to skin tightening. If that 1.7 ounce cream was to last you the month, do you actually think it will do things it was marketed to do? At BioKorium® we believe that you would need if not 8 ounces but 16 ounces in order to maintain proper skin hydration for a month. Our Skin Water® Hydration Cream was designed with this concept in mind. Therefore proper hydration internally as well as externally contributes to reaching Anti-Aging goals.

Anti-Aging with the BioKorium® Skin Water® Hydration Cream with Hydro-Force® Technology can be used two ways: 1. As a Mask and 2. As a Moisturizer. Esthetician and Skin Care Specialist Vivian Moreno demonstrates the penetrating qualities of how to Anti-Age with Skin Water®.

In this episode Vivian uses BioKorium’s Original Facial Wash as a Mask.  The Facial Wash is another multiple use product.

ANTI-AGING WITH PHOTOJOURNALING | STEP ONE: ANTI-AGING THROUGH PHOTO DOCUMENTATION.

Practicing Anti-Aging is the specialty at BioKorium® Skin Care. Esthetician and Skin Care Expert Vivian Moreno has developed a way to demonstrate changes within the skin during the aging process, this in order to determine a plan to combat anti-aging. This process is known as Photojournaling, which is Step One of the Anti-Aging process.

Back in November of 2018 Vivian posted a blog on the very subject of Photojournaling in addition to the Seven Signs of Aging, which she will talk about in a future video.  In that blog posting she presents her first photo taken in April 2009 at Age 53.  The next photo was the one that shocked her taken in December 2017.  From these two photos she realized that what the skin care the industry was preaching, wasn’t working.  She began to tackle the question of “Why it wasn’t working!”  The next picture was taken almost a year later at Age 63 in November 2018, which showed her progress.  Photo Journaling gave a Snapshot in Time,  which allows one to compare with other Snapshots in Time.  Using these Time Shots as reference points gives a visual window to allow her to change the way main stream teaches skin care.  Photo Journaling; a Visual Window to Anti-Aging.

WINTERTIME: THE BEST TIME FOR CHEMICAL PEELING

By Vivian Moreno, Esthetician

This is one question I get a lot, simply because everyone wants to have a chemical peel in order to improve their appearance.  We’ve been told it’s an easy and quick solution for our facial woes.  But depending on the season, a peel may not be conducive to receiving optimium results, and aren’t results what we expect?  Therefore, the time of the year is important because Chemical Peeling  is as if your putting your skin thru a major workout, its trauma to the skin and the conditions for recovery is what’s equally important.

I have already begun my chemical peel for the winter.  Because of my age I will try to fit in at least 3 peels for the season. I will Include some spotting especially around my mouth and eyes. Check with your Doctor or Skin Care Professional if you are planning to do your eyes. I recommend the eyes for some of my clients but not all of them. People want  to peel and get the results, but what they don’t  realize or understand is the healing process.  The detail is in the healing not the peeling. No one teaches us this, even the professionals don’t, some clients will freak out during recovery. The whole idea with a chemical peel is to create a wound so that the skin can go through the healing process. There are 3 to 4 stages of healing (depending on who you ask) so it does take some time. If the skin heals up properly the collagen will rebuild and strengthen the skin, Awsome! If the skin is left vulnerable and  healing is interrupted problems can occur.

Skin redness, heat bumps, tightening, itchiness, and dry cracked peely skin, are all common after a chemical peel.  The deeper you take your peel the more activity will occur.  This is the natural inflammation process at work, which initiates the process of healing.  All these sequences need to be understood in order to make the final goal productive.

Now lets look at why Winter peeling  is more beneficial than Summer Peeling.   The Summer Season consist of more sunshine therefore more heat and sweat. which is not as conducive to a chemical peel, especially in regards to the healing aspect. With heat there is more opportunity for infection as well as its effect on nerve endings, causing more pain, discomfort, and irritation.  With more sunlight there is the opportunity for skin complications including discoloration. In the summer I like to use a light glycolic acid or a pumpkin enzyme for maintenance. If I am in need of a peel I will stick to a lunch time peel or a light peel that I really won’t have any down time or problems.

The Wintertime is the  perfect time to prepare your skin for the following summer by doing a peel. I will in fact try to get as much peeling in as possible.  It’s the perfect time and seasonal environment to build skin strength and skin immunity which leads to skin health.  What I mean, is that if you have skin health, your skin will have the strength and ability to endure and absorb the challenges of the following summer season.   The cool temperature of winter feels better on your skin and  is less irritating when your skin is healing. There is a reason why most surgeries are done in sub normal temperature environments.  A cooler surgery room means less chance of infection and other anomalies. In the cold winter months you are more likely to stay indoors and out of the sun during the healing process.

If you decide on getting  a professional peel this winter, be sure your Skin care professional is highly skilled.  A chemical peel performed correctly will lift and tighten the skin, add amazing clarity, reduce and eliminate fine lines and wrinkles, and most importantly, bring your skin back to better health.  That’s why the professional you choose to perform this procedure is important.  A Chemical Peel done wrong may cause deeper wrinkles, dry your skin out, increase the opportunity for discoloration and age the skin faster by the very anti-aging methods used, causing faster sagging of the skin. Remember the detail is in the healing not the peeling.
